Why do Mac computers have what it seems to be a camera on top of the monitor?

I am in the college and this mac computer has this black thing with a red tiny light on top of the monitor. Is that a camera?
Ohhhh, its a webcam. Thanks!

    Yes, it is. They are generally used for video / audio chat through applications such as iChat and Skype.

    PhotoBooth and other software lets you use them to take photographs.

    That would be the iSight cam which is both used for iChat and PhotoBooth.

    first of all its a camera to take funnt or normal pics and second of all its a web cam!!!!!!!!!!!
